Warm Green Smoothie Recipe for Comfort and Energy

Hot green smoothie – a warming, healthy smoothie ideal for a chilly morning. This version uses the classic kale, apple and dates combination with the addition of brewed green tea for gentle warmth and extra antioxidants.

A quick and healthy hot smoothie for a cold day

The weather is getting cooler, and while I still love porridge, I don’t enjoy icy smoothies first thing in the morning. To replace the recent habit of toast and coffee, I’m experimenting with hot smoothies—flavours that feel comforting without being heavy. Over the next few Saturdays I’ll be sharing different warm smoothie ideas.

Not all smoothies translate well to heat. Creamy bases like almond milk or banana can become cloying when warmed, so I’m focusing on two approaches:

  • Light, refreshing or spicy blends with a touch of sweetness — warm but not thick, so you don’t feel like you’re drinking soup.
  • Creamy, warming and filling blends that still provide good nutrition and keep you satisfied.

For this first recipe, we’ll keep it simple: kale, apple and dates, with brewed green tea. You can substitute jasmine or white tea if you prefer. White tea is made from young leaves and unopened buds and has a milder flavour than green tea while being rich in antioxidants. It also tends to be gentler on an empty stomach.

One important safety note: do not pour boiling liquid straight into your blender. Very hot liquids can damage glass blender jars or build pressure and cause splashing when the lid is opened. Check that your blender can handle warm liquids, or let the tea cool slightly first. Add the kale, apple and dates to the blender with a splash of cold water and a splash of the hot tea so the mixture is only lukewarm. Blend until smooth, then pour into a cup and stir in the remaining tea. Enjoy while warm.

Hot Green Smoothie

A quick and healthy hot smoothie for a cold day
Prep Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 5 mins
Servings: 1 cup
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: British

Ingredients

  • 30 g (1 oz) kale
  • 1 sweet dessert apple, chopped (I like Jazz)
  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted and chopped
  • 1 cup hot brewed green tea

Instructions

  1. Place kale, apple and dates in the blender. Add a splash of cold water and a splash of the brewed green tea. (Warning: do not add boiling liquid directly to most blender jars.)
  2. Blend on high for a minute or two until the kale and dates are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour the blended mixture into a cup and stir in the remaining green tea. Taste and adjust sweetness or temperature if needed, then drink warm.

Notes

To reduce calories, use one Medjool date instead of two. Medjool dates are roughly 66 calories each, so using one will lower the total.
