Chewy Chocolate Orange Cookies Recipe for Zesty Treats

Simple to prepare and wonderfully tangy, these chocolate orange cookies are perfect with a glass of cold milk for an afternoon treat.

They have a crisp exterior and a chewy center — and they’re an excellent way to use up leftover Easter chocolate.

I recently found a forgotten Easter egg tucked away in the cupboard. It wasn’t the finest chocolate, but instead of tossing it I chopped it up and added orange zest to the cookie dough. The result was delicious.

This recipe transforms modest chocolate into something tasty — imagine how good it will be with quality chocolate.

The base recipe is adapted from my Apple Crumble Cookies, with the simple additions of chocolate and orange zest.

Ingredients

  • 250 g plain flour
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 ½ tsp cornflour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 170 g melted butter
  • 250 g light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 100 g chocolate chopped into small pieces
  • Zest of 2 large oranges

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the plain flour, bicarbonate of soda, cornflour and salt — this is the dry mix. In a separate bowl, whisk the melted butter and light brown sugar for about a minute, then add the egg and vanilla extract to form the wet mix. Pour the wet mix into the dry mix and stir until just combined. Fold in the chopped chocolate and the zest of two large oranges to form a dough.
  • Shape the dough into a rough sausage approximately 4 cm in diameter, wrap it tightly in cling film and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. If preferred, spoon the dough onto the cling film, shape it roughly, then wrap and roll to form the sausage.
  • When chilled, preheat the oven to 160°C (fan). Remove the dough from the fridge and slice into 25–30 rounds. Place the rounds on non-stick baking sheets with space between them to allow for spreading. Bake in batches if necessary.
  • Bake for about 7 minutes. If you prefer crispier cookies, bake for an extra 1–2 minutes, but watch closely to avoid overbrowning.
  • Remove the trays from the oven and let the cookies cool for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

Tip Store the cookies in a sealed container; they should keep for up to a week.
