Halloween “Scream Cheese” — a playful party snack inspired by Hotel Transylvania. It contains no cheese, but kids will recognise it instantly!

This is a very simple, silly idea — more of a quick project than a recipe, using just a few ingredients for an impressive, kid-approved result. After asking my children to name a spooky food from a Halloween movie, they immediately called out “Scream Cheese” from Hotel Transylvania. That gave me the idea to recreate a version that’s easy and safe for kids.
After experimenting with mozzarella and toasted bagel constructions, I discovered marshmallows make the best stretchy, gooey “scream.” Mozzarella needed to be very hot and plentiful to stretch, which made it hard for small hands and didn’t look quite right. So I swapped the cheese for marshmallow — much more manageable and far more fun.

The concept is straightforward: melt two oversized marshmallows on the bottom half of a toasted bagel, cool slightly, then assemble a little bagel wedge as the “head” and use almond flakes for eyes. Stick a fork into the bagel wedge to lift it and stretch the marshmallow, creating the “scream” effect.
It’s delightful but messy — expect sticky fingers. The kids loved it and thought it was hilarious to have marshmallow bagels for breakfast. It’s quick to make, a little fiddly to perfect the face, but great fun and very effective as a Halloween treat.
Halloween Scream Cheese Recipe

Halloween Scream Cheese — minus the cheese
A fun, kid-friendly Halloween snack that mimics the “Scream Cheese” from Hotel Transylvania using toasted bagel, marshmallow and almond flakes.
Prep: 3 mins | Cook: 2 mins | Total: 5 mins
Serves: 1 | Course: Snacks | Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 1 bagel, sliced in half and toasted
- 2 giant white marshmallows
- 2 almond flakes (or substitute dried cranberries or pine nuts)
Instructions
- Place the bottom half of the toasted bagel on a small plate.
- Take the top half and cut a wedge out (cut the top into quarters and save the extras for eating). Put the wedge to one side — this becomes the monster’s head.
- Put two giant marshmallows on top of the bagel bottom.
- Microwave on high for about 20–30 seconds. Watch closely; when the marshmallows have roughly doubled in size they are ready.
- Remove from the microwave and leave to cool for a minute so it’s safe to handle. Stick a fork through the bagel wedge with the point upwards.
- Use a knife to tuck the bagel wedge under most of the melted marshmallow. Add the almond flakes as eyes. Lift the fork up and down to stretch the marshmallow, creating the “scream” effect.
- It may take a couple of tries to get a face you like — practice makes it more dramatic.
Notes
Expect sticky fingers and some mess — that’s part of the fun. The marshmallow will cool and firm up a little, so time your assembly while it’s still stretchy but not too hot.
