Chocolate is my top pick for a Valentine’s gift — flowers are lovely, but a box of chocolates is hard to beat. Who hasn’t secretly hoped a loved one would share their sweets?

Chris and I are both chocoholics, and I’m probably the worst offender. No Dairy Milk is safe in the house once I know it’s there.

I’m trying to be good at the moment — my birthday’s in March and I still want to lose about 10 pounds. I’ve been experimenting with different approaches: low carb, 5:2, calorie counting. The reality is it comes down to curbing the bingeing and getting off the sofa more often.

I do get grumpy if I can’t have an occasional treat. I don’t mind eating well during the week if I have something to look forward to — ideally a whole treat day now and then. That’s probably why my progress has been a little slow.

Exercise is improving though. I had a tough PT session this week, an early morning power walk, and a family badminton session yesterday. Doing something active and fun with the whole family makes it feel like a treat instead of a chore.

Valentines Nutella French Toast Hearts

Chris and I have decided not to buy each other chocolates for Valentine’s — maybe a card, a small homemade gift, and a nice meal we’ll cook together once the kids are in bed, but no big boxes to derail us.

It’s a busy week for treats anyway: pancake day, Chinese New Year and my mum’s birthday all fall close together. Maybe a bootcamp retreat for the week would remove all temptation!

Will we be making these Nutella and strawberry French toast hearts on Valentine’s Day? I’ve already made them once and we all dug in straight after I finished photographing them, forks in hand — so maybe not. I’m not ruling them out completely though. ❤️

Cuisine: American, French

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp plain (all-purpose) flour
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • Pinch salt
  • 3 tbsp caster sugar (or superfine)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 6 slices extra-thick sliced white bread
  • 10 strawberries (look for dark red, juicy berries)
  • 2 figs
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 135 g (1/3 cup + 2 tbsp) Nutella, slightly warmed to loosen
  • 1 tsp confectioners’ (icing) sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add the eggs and whisk to combine, then add the milk and vanilla and whisk until smooth.
  2. Use a large heart-shaped cookie cutter (12–15 cm) to cut a heart from each slice of bread. Alternatively, cut freehand, using the first heart as a template so the shapes match.
  3. Slice the strawberries lengthwise. If you like, shape the slices into little hearts with a knife. Cut each fig into three wedges.
  4. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Dip each bread heart into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  5. Fry the dipped bread in the pan for 1–2 minutes per side until golden. For crisp edges, briefly fry the sides by holding stacked hearts on their edge with tongs.
  6. To assemble, place a French toast heart on each plate. Top with a tablespoon of Nutella and half the strawberries, then repeat to make a stack of three hearts on each plate. Arrange three fig wedges on top and drizzle over the remaining Nutella.
  7. Sift confectioners’ sugar over the stacks and serve immediately.
