A stunning Blue Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte, perfectly crafted with creamy homemade cashew milk for a delightful morning treat.

For those who know me, my profound love affair with matcha is no secret. It’s more than just a drink; it’s a daily ritual, a moment of calm, and a source of gentle, sustained energy. While my go-to Honey Matcha Latte holds a special place in my routine, I often crave variety and an extra touch of visual splendor. When that desire strikes, I invariably turn to this captivating Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte with Creamy Honey Cashew Milk.

The inspiration for this vibrant concoction traces back to a memorable trip to San Diego. Each morning, I found myself drawn to a local cafe that served a strikingly similar matcha latte. Its mesmerizing hues and the intriguing addition of spirulina left a lasting impression. I was captivated not only by its aesthetic appeal but also by the unique flavor profile it offered. Upon returning home, I knew I had to recreate that magic, adapting it to my kitchen and infusing it with my signature creamy cashew milk.

The subtle sweetness of honey and the richness of cashews beautifully complement the distinctive notes of the superfood powders. While you are welcome to use your favorite store-bought nut milk, I highly recommend adding a touch of honey or your preferred natural sweetener to achieve that harmonious balance and enhance the overall experience.

Unveiling the Power of Blue Spirulina: Health Benefits & Why You Need It

Blue spirulina, a captivating blue-green algae, is far more than just a natural food coloring; it’s a bona fide superfood brimming with an impressive array of health benefits. Its striking color comes from phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant that gives it unique properties distinct from green spirulina. Incorporating this vibrant powder into your diet can significantly boost your nutritional intake.

Firstly, blue spirulina is celebrated as a **complete protein**. This is particularly remarkable for our plant-loving friends, as it contains all nine essential amino acids necessary for human health. Adding spirulina to your smoothies, lattes, or meals is an effortless and delicious way to ensure you’re getting a natural, high-quality protein source, supporting muscle repair, growth, and overall bodily functions.

Secondly, its intense blue hue is a visual indicator of its potent **antioxidant properties**. Phycocyanin, the pigment responsible for its color, is a powerhouse compound known to combat oxidative stress and protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. This can contribute to anti-aging effects and a stronger immune system, making your body more resilient against environmental stressors.

Thirdly, spirulina is highly regarded for its **anti-inflammatory capabilities**. Chronic inflammation is at the root of many modern diseases. The compounds found in blue spirulina can help reduce inflammation throughout the body, potentially alleviating symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions and promoting overall well-being. Regular consumption may support a healthier inflammatory response, contributing to greater comfort and vitality.

Beyond these primary benefits, blue spirulina also supports detoxification, enhances brain health, and can even contribute to skin radiance. It’s truly a marvel of nature, transforming your daily drinks into nutrient-dense elixirs.

Essential Ingredients for Your Cashew Milk & Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

This recipe is designed to be a delightful two-part creation! First, we’ll guide you through making my signature Creamy Honey Cashew Milk, a staple I prepare weekly for all my latte cravings. Then, we’ll assemble the star of the show: the Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte. Whether you opt for homemade nut milk or a high-quality store-bought alternative, I’ve broken down both ingredient lists to ensure you have everything you need for success.

Individual ingredients for Blue Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte and Homemade Cashew Milk
A curated selection of the finest ingredients for a truly exceptional superfood latte.

For the Homemade Creamy Honey Cashew Milk:

  • Raw Cashews: The star ingredient for incredibly smooth nut milk. Cashew milk stands out as one of the easiest homemade nut milks to prepare because it requires no straining! Once properly soaked, raw cashews blend effortlessly into water, creating a luxuriously creamy texture without any gritty residue.
  • Water: Essential for blending your cashews into a milky consistency. Using filtered water ensures the purest taste for your homemade milk.
  • Coconut Cream: This is the thick, rich layer found at the top of a chilled can of full-fat coconut milk. It adds an unparalleled creaminess and a subtle hint of coconut flavor, elevating your cashew milk to a gourmet level.
  • Honey: A natural, unrefined sweetener that beautifully offsets the inherent earthiness often found in both matcha and spirulina. Feel free to adjust the quantity to your personal taste preference, adding more for a sweeter profile.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of pure vanilla extract works wonders in enhancing the overall flavor profile of the cashew milk, adding a warm and inviting aromatic note that complements the other ingredients.
  • Sea Salt: Just a tiny pinch of sea salt is crucial for brightening and balancing all the flavors, preventing the milk from tasting flat and bringing out its natural sweetness.

For the Blue Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte:

  • Matcha Powder: The quality of your matcha significantly impacts the flavor and vibrancy of your latte. With an abundance of matcha powders available, I recently conducted a taste test to identify my top picks. For this particular recipe, I achieved fantastic results using @piquelife matcha, known for its smooth taste and bright green color.
  • Blue Spirulina Powder: While this might not be a common pantry staple for everyone, I assure you it’s an ingredient well worth seeking out. Its vibrant blue color creates a stunning visual contrast, and its nutritional profile offers a fantastic boost. It’s also incredibly versatile and can be added to smoothies, yogurt, or other drinks for a dose of color and health. I personally recommend KOS organic blue spirulina powder for its purity and quality.
  • Water: For whisking the matcha and spirulina to ensure a smooth, lump-free base for your latte.
  • Ice: Essential for transforming this into a perfectly chilled and refreshing iced latte.

Crafting Your Masterpiece: How to Make Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

Prepare to create a visually stunning and incredibly delicious latte. Follow these simple steps to bring this superfood elixir to life in your own kitchen.

Step-by-Step: Making the Creamy Honey Cashew Milk

Homemade cashew milk offers a richness and freshness that store-bought versions simply can’t match. It’s surprisingly easy to make and forms the perfect creamy foundation for our latte.

  1. Soak the Cashews: Begin by placing the raw cashews into an airtight container. Cover them completely with fresh water. Allow them to soak overnight for optimal softness, or for a minimum of 4 hours if you’re short on time. Soaking ensures the cashews blend into a super smooth, silky milk.
  2. Rinse Thoroughly: Once the soaking is complete, carefully strain the cashews. Rinse them under cool, running water until the water runs completely clear. This step helps remove any impurities and ensures the cleanest flavor for your milk.

Perfectly soaked cashews are the secret to incredibly smooth homemade nut milk.
Rinsed cashews ready for blending into milk
Ensure a thorough rinse to achieve the purest flavor for your cashew milk.
  1. Blend to Perfection: Transfer the rinsed cashews to a high-speed blender (a powerful blender like a Vitamix works best for achieving ultimate creaminess). Add the 7 cups of fresh water, coconut cream, honey, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Blend on high for a full 2 minutes, or until the mixture is completely smooth and beautifully frothy. There should be no discernible cashew pieces.
  2. Storage: Pour your freshly made cashew milk into an airtight container or glass bottle. Store it in the refrigerator for up to one week. This versatile milk is perfect for all your lattes, smoothies, overnight oats, or simply to enjoy on its own!

Assembling Your Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

Now for the fun part – layering the flavors and colors to create your breathtaking latte!

  1. Prepare the Matcha Base: In a small bowl, combine the matcha powder with 2 ounces of hot (but not boiling) water. Whisk vigorously using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small electric frother until the matcha is fully dissolved, smooth, and a light foam appears on the surface. Ensure there are no clumps.

The vibrant green matcha forms the beautiful bottom layer of your latte.
  1. Layer the Matcha and Milk: Fill your favorite serving glass with ice. Carefully pour the whisked matcha over the ice, creating the vibrant green base layer. Then, gently add ¼ cup of your homemade cashew milk (or desired amount) over the matcha. Pour slowly over the back of a spoon for a beautiful layered effect.
  2. Create the Spirulina Layer: In a separate small glass or bowl, combine another ¼ cup of cashew milk with the blue spirulina powder. Whisk thoroughly until the spirulina is completely dissolved and the milk turns a stunning, uniform blue.
  3. Final Layer & Enjoy: Slowly pour the blue spirulina cashew milk over the white cashew milk layer in your serving glass. Watch as the striking blue creates a mesmerizing swirl or a distinct third layer. Give it a gentle stir if you prefer to blend the colors, then sip and revel in your visually appealing and deliciously healthy creation!

Tips for the Perfect Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

  • Quality Matters: Invest in high-quality ceremonial or culinary grade matcha for the best flavor and color. For spirulina, choose an organic, pure blue spirulina powder.
  • Smooth Blending: Ensure your cashew milk is utterly smooth. Any grittiness will detract from the latte experience. A powerful blender is your best friend here.
  • Temperature Control: When whisking matcha, use hot water that is not boiling (around 175°F / 80°C). Boiling water can burn the matcha, making it taste bitter.
  • Lump-Free Matcha and Spirulina: Sift your matcha powder before whisking to prevent clumps. For the spirulina, whisk it thoroughly with the milk in a separate glass to ensure a smooth, vibrant blue layer.
  • Layering Technique: For distinct layers, pour each liquid slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the previous layer. This reduces splash and helps maintain separation.
  • Sweetness Adjustment: Taste your cashew milk and the finished latte. Adjust honey or other sweeteners to your preference. The earthiness of matcha and spirulina can be beautifully mellowed by a touch of sweetness.

Customization & Variations: Make It Your Own

This recipe is incredibly versatile! Feel free to experiment and tailor it to your dietary needs or taste preferences:

  • Different Nut Milks: While cashew milk is my favorite for its creaminess, almond milk, oat milk, or even coconut milk can be used. Just ensure it’s unsweetened if you want to control the sweetness level yourself.
  • Sweetener Alternatives: If you prefer to avoid honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, or a few drops of stevia can be excellent substitutes.
  • Hot Latte Option: Although I typically enjoy this iced, you can easily adapt it into a hot latte. Simply heat your cashew milk gently on the stovetop (do not boil), then combine with the whisked matcha and spirulina mixtures.
  • Extra Superfoods: Boost the nutritional content even further by adding a pinch of adaptogens like ashwagandha or a dash of collagen peptides for added protein.
  • Citrus Twist: A tiny squeeze of lemon or lime juice can brighten the flavors and add an unexpected zing.

Why This Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte Will Become Your New Favorite

Servings: 1
Blue Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte with Homemade Cashew Milk - Olivia Adriance

Yes, matcha and spirulina are two nutritional powerhouses, and I love to make this drink whenever I’m looking for something extra special and delicious to sip on!

Ingredients

Cashew Milk:

  • 1 ½ cups raw cashews (soaked at least 4 hours or up to overnight)
  • 7 cups water
  • ¼ cup coconut cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Spirulina Matcha:

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder (I used Pique Life matcha)
  • 2 ounces water
  • ½ teaspoon blue spirulina powder (I used Kos)
  • ½ cup cashew milk (divided)

Instructions

Make the Cashew Milk:

  1. Add your raw cashews to an airtight container and cover with water.
  2. Soak overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  3. Once soaked, strain your cashews and rinse until the water runs clear.
  4. Add the soaked cashews, water, coconut cream, honey, vanilla extract, and sea salt to a high-speed blender and blend for 2 minutes until frothy.
  5. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.

Make the Latte:

  1. Whisk together the matcha and 2 ounces of water.
  2. Take your serving glass, add ice, and pour the matcha on top. Add 1/4 cup of cashew milk, or to taste.
  3. In a separate glass, whisk together 1/4 cup cashew milk and spirulina. Pour over the matcha. Enjoy!

Notes

The above recipe is for a full batch of Cashew milk so you will have leftovers. Use it in other latte recipes, blend into smoothies, stir into overnight oats, or add it to my Cinnamon Apple Breakfast Quinoa Porridge for a nutty flavor.

If you’d prefer not to make your own nut milk, that’s fine! You may want to add a touch of honey to your latte to balance out the flavors.

I haven’t tried this as a hot latte because I tend to prefer iced matcha lattes.
